philip pullman confirmed a fan’s question of “are people with same-sex daemons trans*” with “i never thought about it, but yeah that sounds about right” and i really really like that

maybe people who are genderqueer, genderfluid, or…

You know, even when I was younger I assumed that same-gender daemons’ people were gay? BUT I LIKE THIS BETTER

aw man i may have misquoted it may have been that they were gay was the thing he confirmed crap i’d better go double check it oops

(although i also like this better)

i found the quote:

Philip Pullman spoke of this matter at Unicon 2000. Asked what a same-sex dæmons might indicate of their human, he replied:

I don’t know. There are plenty of things about my worlds I don’t know, and that’s one of them. It might do! But it might not! Occasionally, no doubt, people do have a demon of the same sex; that might indicate homosexuality, or it might indicate some other sort of gift or quality, such as second sight. I do not know. But I don’t have to know everything about what I write.”

Further explained at Readerville in 2001:

“Same-sex daemons: it was clear to me from the beginning that occasionally someone might acquire a daemon of the same sex. What might that mean? I don’t know everything it might mean; it could mean something about their own sexuality, or it might mean something quite different. It’s one of the many things I don’t know fully about my world. Similarly with how daemons are born. There wasn’t actually any part of the story that depended on studying my daemonic gynecology, so I didn’t go into it. (x)

so yeah i misquoted, damn

As evidenced by the previous reblogs from my other account, I’m on a bit of a His Dark Materials kick. I think I’ll definitely be rereading and liveblogging it soon. But I’ll do it here on this account. This blog doesn’t get enough use as it is, and i can’t be letting the url go to waste!

maybe people who are genderqueer, genderfluid, or agender also have daemons of species that have no set sex or reproduce asexually… or perhaps not. Maybe hermaphroditic animals? or like, i think frogs can actually swap sexes? I forget exactly.. i know there’s an amphibious animal that can do that…

I always liked to think that they have a huge range of daemon species, but they’re always addressed with neutral pronouns and have unisex names, just like their owners might. Like, say we have Fitz—Fitz is a genderqueer scholar with a cat daemon. The cat is called Pallas—a Greek name that applies both to a male Titan and to the goddess Athena. Fitz uses “they/them/theirs” pronouns, and so does Pallas.

I do agree with the previous theory, though, that whatever the species of the daemon, it wouldn’t have a set or obvious sex.

I never liked the idea that they would be restricted to a certain range of species based strictly on that species’ sex or method of sexual reproduction. That’s so limited, and there are so many people who identify these ways, there simply has to be a wider range of daemon species to represent them! After all, the daemon’s shape is based mostly on one’s core personality traits or basic nature. Going back to Fitz, their Pallas might symbolize their clever, intuitive, independent nature, in ways that, say, a snail wouldn’t.

I used to think about his a lot.

My personal view is that it depends on how important your gender identity is to you. There are some people who are genderqueer who just are, and there are some people who are like, aggressively queer. (That is probably not the best wording, so I want to make clear that I think both are great.) If you are the second than a hermaphroditic animal is more likely, but if you are the former than the animal form would have more to do with the restof your personality.

Then again again, inter-sex conditions happen in humans, so I do not think it would be too off the norm to have a XXY looking cat thing.

on the flip side of the upsetting self-loathing post, would a narcissist be like… really really really close with their daemon? like they wouldn’t want to talk to anyone else because no one else is worthy of contact with theirself but… literally theirself?

the tale of narcissus would be that when his daemon settled, they both wasted away and starved to death because they just spent forever with each other, not moving, not doing anything but being in each other’s presence, completely enraptured

That sounds almost a little over-the-top, IDK.

I think it would more likely be an animal that we as a society have associated with beauty and constant preening.

Like, A peacock or some other redonk bird of paradise.

I mean, it is not all that different from our reality, and extreme narcissists are more likely to act like douchebags than to actually drain away staring at themselves a la the Greek myth.

Mmmm, true, very true.

Still the Greek myth idea is amusing me a lot.

i wonder if people who have a lot of self-loathing take it out on their daemons, or their daemons attack them or something

i really hope not that’d be really upsetting but it’s also really likely well fuck

I finished Princess Tutu last night, expect many more tutus to be drawn.

Supposed to be Grantaire from “Paris Burning” but it’s really not even remotely. Eh, it’s a doodle.

music doodle no. 3: “Paint It, Black” - The Rolling Stones

In which Rose dies (most likely in Kanaya’s arms), and she goes on a Gamzee-esque murder spree, killing all of the trolls.
